Additional checks for maximum safety

In addition to the standard survey scope, you can also select a number of optional checkpoints for our boat and yacht survey. These allow for a more in-depth assessment of the findings – tailored to the type of boat, age, equipment and individual requirements.

In this way, you receive an expert opinion that is tailored precisely to your needs and offers you additional security when buying a yacht.

Optional checkpoints

  • Osmosis check (moisture measurement GRP)
  • Corrosion check (cathodic protection)
  • Thermography check (thermal image analysis)
  • Oil analysis (engine/transmission oil)
  • Test drive / Sea Trial

Other additional services

  • Market value assessment
  • Support in drafting contracts
  • Repair costs estimate
  • Special insurance conditions

Osmosis check (moisture measurement GRP)

The osmosis check involves assessing the risk of moisture and osmosis in the laminate (typically in GRP hulls). Depending on the boat, year of construction and condition, moisture measurements and visual findings can help to identify risks at an early stage.

from € 120.00 (depending on boat size)

A multimeter for measuring the hull potential as part of a yacht appraisal (corrosion check / cathodic protection)

Corrosion check (cathodic protection)

Galvanic corrosion and stray currents can be safety-relevant and cause high consequential costs – especially on underwater metal parts, onboard passages, shaft systems and in connection with electrical installations.

from € 90.00 (depending on boat size)

Thermography check (thermal image analysis)

Inspection of the engine(s) and all critical components of the drivetrain (gearbox, shaft bearings) with regard to their thermal load using a high-resolution thermal imaging camera (Flir E5). Depending on the equipment, the inspection of electrical components (e.g. lithium battery banks and charging systems) is also recommended.

from € 60.00 per machine / test unit

Two oil samples from a drive motor for analysis in the course of a yacht appraisal

Oil analysis (engine/transmission oil)

An oil analysis is a meaningful additional test to better assess the condition of the engine and transmission. Laboratory analysis can detect indications of wear, contamination or thermal stress – often before damage occurs. The analysis is carried out by a laboratory specializing in marine engines (CAPAX Marine Engineering).

Frequent Questions

Basically, boats and yachts built in older years are more frequently affected by osmosis due to the resin formulations used at that time. However, this does not mean that more recent years of construction are spared (especially in the case of defects in the laminate structure). In addition, an increased moisture content can cause a weakening of the laminate even without real osmosis processes. We therefore always recommend an osmosis check from an age of 10 years. For younger boats, a moisture measurement can also be arranged on site if necessary, depending on the findings.

Please also read our article “Osmosis: myths, facts and areas of tension: A critical look for boat owners and buyers” for more relevant information.

The corrosion check involves evaluating whether the cathodic protection of a yacht (i.e. sacrificial anodes, galvanic insulator, bonding system) is sufficiently efficient. It is also about the question of possible leakage currents, which can cause enormous damage to underwater metals such as onboard diffusers and sea valves, but also drive housings and shafts.

Measuring the so-called “hull potential” helps to identify risks to underwater metal parts and protective systems at an early stage. This is relevant to safety and protects against expensive consequential damage.

Please also read our article “Galvanic corrosion on boats” for further information.

A thermography check or thermal imaging analysis is a useful additional check in any case – regardless of the year of construction or motorization.

It offers the possibility of early detection of any problems in the cooling system and ensures that key components of the drivetrain are not exposed to thermal overload.

If maintenance records are missing, the mileage is high, you suspect abnormalities or need an objective assessment of the condition of the engine/transmission for purchase/negotiation. Laboratory values can provide indications of wear or contamination before a defect becomes apparent.

In many cases, yes – but it often makes sense to combine this with an overall expert opinion so that the findings can be classified correctly. Simply contact us or make a note of this in your inquiry.
